Natural Sugars came to life in 2009 after three smart cookies saw a gap in the market for premium quality commodities with an affordable price point and top-notch customer service. Since then, we’ve curated a pretty impressive portfolio of products including sugars, oils, baking needs and 100% NOT Milk Powders, that we’re rather proud of.
We’re a young and passionate team of 14 that rejects the fit out of a large corporate and instead prefer to embrace a more personal vibe. We may be small, but the Natural Sugars’ family is perfectly formed - we always go the extra mile for our customers, and encourage our people to think outside the box and use their entrepreneurial flair to come up with new and creative ideas.
Above all, we are experts in what we do – which is creating funky, modern and delicious products that New Zealanders just like us will use and love, and having fun while doing it. And like typical Kiwis, we like to stray off the beaten path when it comes to doing stuff. We love to work with innovations that have meanings and make changes. We search for market trends that match our brand values, add a cool story to our portfolio, and most importantly make a little difference to the world, somehow – whether that’s looking after the environment or you and your family’s health.
Take our Stir. NOT Milk Powders for example – we noticed a desire for dairy-free milks, but everything out there contained little real ingredients and became wasteful when milk went off, not to mention came in nasty unrecyclable packaging. So naturally, we came up with a powdered version that takes less packaging, contains truckloads of natural ingredients, lasts six months in the pantry, and that you can make as you go. They’re now the market-leading natural 100% not milk powders – and that’s exactly how we roll.
Natural Sugars is 100% Kiwi owned and operated, and made for Kiwis, by Kiwis. (We also send our stuff overseas, because they’re just that good and we want everyone to have a taste).
Hamish ticked off the coveted goal of ‘start your own business by the age of 30’ from his bucket list when he founded Natural Sugars alongside two business partners in 2009. Since then, Hamish has steered the business from concept to fully-fledged market leading organisation, with an enviable growth rate of 20% per annum since inception. The owner of an undeniable work hard, play hard personality, Hamish is confident that future growth is looking even brighter and is the first to admit how proud he is of his passionate team as they knock goals out of the park each day. When not founding successful companies, Hamish can be found out on the boat with wife Anna and kids Ollie, Hugo and Summer, playing squash, or enjoying a game of social rugby.
Making funky, delicious products is all good and well, but making sure you guys get to eat them is the most important part as far as we’re concerned. That’s where Retail Pro Bruna comes in – as Natural Sugars National Retail & Marketing Manager, she’s responsible for spreading the word about our new products and getting them onto the supermarket shelf, so you can take them home and enjoy them. Bruna moved to NZ from Brazil in 2005, and studied a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Supply Chain Management at The University of Auckland before starting her own FMCG business. Bruna likens working for NS to working for her own business - it’s kept her entrepreneurial skills satisfied and she can’t wait to continue to grow the Natural Sugars brand. In fact, instead of leaving work at work, Bruna loves sharing it with friends and family and considers the dreaded Monday-itis a complete myth. Outside of work, you’ll find her challenging her fitness with functional training and yoga, or socialising with friends in Auckland’s bustling CBD.
After dabbling in the liquor distribution industry as a management accountant, Michael swapped the hard stuff for a sweeter gig as Natural Sugars’ CFO. Having studied at the University of Auckland and completed the NZ Chartered Accountant Programme, he keeps us all in line when it comes to where we spend our cash. Aside from being the big boss of Natural Sugars’ bank accounts and manager of all of our department reports, Michael’s other love is sport – he recently travelled to Turkey to referee at the World Youth Water Polo Championships and still plays at national league level.
Having recently returned from living in Canada, Kurt returns to the grocery industry having spent previous years developing key relationships within the retail segment.
Kurt is a passionate sportsmen dedicating time to his chosen sport of Crossfit. Outside of the arena he turns his passion for food into many decadent creations using only the best Natural Sugars Products.
Having been in the shipping industry since 2004, Sonia is the perfect person for the job of overseeing everything shipping and customer-service related as Operations Manager at Natural Sugars. You’ll find her wrangling all our suppliers, stock levels, purchases and contracts, while simultaneously keeping the rest of us in line – and when trouble arises, she’s everyone’s first port of call to solve those difficult issues and answer the hard questions. Outside of work, Sonia loves getting active by playing squash, tennis and walking her dogs, catching up with friends for a few drinks, and trying her hand at landscaping the garden.
Fernanda is Natural Sugar’s resident sales maven, with eight years’ experience in marketing, sales and customer service under her belt, on top of a Bachelor of Marketing and Business Admin and two years’ postgraduate marketing and sales strategy studies on paper. Responsible for all you lower North Island Natural Sugars lovers, Fernanda is passionate about being part of the dedicated and kind team at Natural Sugars. Outside of work you’ll find her sashaying up a storm on the dancefloor to live music, and exploring new and exciting places with her husband.
Vania moved to New Zealand from Venezuela five years ago and fell in love with our humble wee country. As Natural Sugars’ Customer Service Star and Sales Administrator, she’s a real jack of all trades – whether there’s problem-solving, social media posting, sales or making Friday drinks on the agenda, she’s all over it. When she’s not at work, she spends her time honing her entrepreneurial skills by making jewellery to sell, eating chocolate, op shopping for vintage treasure, and satisfying her sweet tooth (did we mention chocolate?) with brunch out at Auckland’s newest cafes.
